Duty belts typically attach to an inner belt using a hook and loop lining system, forming a more rigid double-layered system, but stand-alone designs are also available. They are usually made of either plain or basketweave leather, particularly the classic Sam Browne design, or a high-strength synthetic material like ballistic nylon, with a standard width of 2.25 inches. Their thickness, density and strength prevents them from twisting or rolling over under the weight of your equipment, leaving it in a consistent position for quick, instinctive access. Many are also fully or partially lined with a high-friction material like suede, preventing them from sliding as you move. High-quality duty belts are also designed ergonomically to reduce the load on the lower back, reducing fatigue and lessening the chance of injury. They are typically equipped with high-strength fastenings to keep them securely closed. This can be a simple single or double prong or friction lock, but many duty belts also come with more secure triple retention buckles like Bianchi’s Cop-Lok, making them more difficult to remove for an assailant to remove during a struggle.
