Belt keepers need to be strong enough to secure the belt in place even during high-intensity activity, so they are always made from strong materials. Many styles are made from high-quality leather, available in multiple finishes to match the rest of your equipment. However, molded synthetics and ballistic nylon webbing are also popular for their strength, wear resistance and light weight. To be effective, they also need to be both secure and easy to fasten and unfasten when required. Most belt keepers use snap fastening systems with either overt or hidden snaps, so you can simply push to lock them into place. Most come with a pair of snaps, but double-width keepers may come with four. Styles with overt metal snaps often treat them with a non-reflective matte finish to reduce reflection. Others rely on hook-and-loop fastening, which provides the added advantage of compatibility with multiple widths of duty belt.
Belt keepers are also sometimes used as carrying systems for light equipment, and equipped with swivel key rings or hidden key pockets.
